Ep 2 Double Trail World Champion and TDS winner Pablo Villa
· Trail Running Ireland Podcast
Eoin Flynn talks to Pablo Villa about his ten-year journey to the perfect race at TDS, working with a sports psychologist, and his advice for trail runners. Ruairi Long brings the race news, René Borg explains how to stay injury-free during lockdown, and Simon Kelly prepares for a 130 km solo run.
Ruairi describes the IMRA lockdown challenge, two weeks of training from Sarah McCormack and Paul Tierney of Missing Link Coaching. IMRA has cancelled all races until June, and plans two double-race weekends in July, in Mayo and in the Reeks. Eoin covers the international calendar, including the World Cup, the World Masters, the under-18 and senior World Championships, and UTMB's determination to go ahead.
René explains that the other 23 hours of the day are when you benefit from a workout. Using a recovery pyramid, he puts the fundamentals first: sleep, nutrition and mental and emotional stress. Next comes a sensible training plan, then recovery techniques, and only then extras such as ice baths. He warns against "over-recovery", suggests turning off the news for a while, and recommends finding a sleep routine that suits you and cutting down on processed food. For runners who want a structured online programme, he suggests Anatomy in Motion and Functional Patterns.
