Ep 3 World Cup Trophy winner and Irish international Sarah McCormack
· Trail Running Ireland Podcast
Eoin Flynn talks to Sarah McCormack about winning the 2019 WMRA World Cup, working on her weaknesses, choosing the mountains over the roads and cross country, and why she runs for Ireland. Ruairi Long brings the race news, and René Borg explains how to start planning now for the autumn races.
Ruairi reports that IMRA has cancelled all events until after 10 August, and that groups of four can meet outdoors from 18 May. He suggests local time trials, and explains that orienteering can resume within 5 km of home. Eoin covers the Andorra Ultra Trail closing down for good, the cancellation of the Leadville 100, ITRA resetting its points to 1 March, and a virtual Transvulcania with more than 3,000 participants.
René explains that no single plan suits everyone, but shared principles of training do. He divides training into three periods, like an ice hockey game: general, race practice and competition. In the general period, consistency comes first: you should be able to repeat a similar effort the next day. Training should also be enjoyable, so the general period can include strides, fartleks and hill sprints, not just long, slow distance.
