Ep 30 Dr Peter Francis: why runners get injured and how to stop it

· Trail Running Ireland Podcast

With racing back, Eoin Flynn looks at how to keep running injury free. René Borg explains why variation, not monotony, is what keeps training consistent. Dr Peter Francis tells the story of his own decade of injuries and comeback, and shares ideas from his new book Running from Injury: yoga, sprinting, running by feel, headspace and trusting the process.

Eoin congratulates friends of the podcast on wins at the first IMRA races back after lockdown and points listeners to IMRA's website for full results. He also asks for Patreon support.

René says the opposite of consistency isn't variation, it's monotony. Running every session at a moderate effort cuts the variation out of training. He walks through Arthur Lydiard's original season plan to show how much variety there was in volume, terrain and pace. He also argues for small changes of pace within runs, using the body as the main feedback system and the watch as extra information.
