Ep 42 The warm-up that builds a better runner, and the World Masters Mountain Running Championships come to Clonmel
· Trail Running Ireland Podcast
René Borg explains how a good warm-up does more than prepare you for one session: done regularly, it builds long-term strength and mobility and helps prevent injury. Then Trisha Blackburn explains how the World Masters Mountain Running Championships came to Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, from 2 to 4 September, and why any mountain runner aged 35 to 79 can pull on the Irish singlet without having to qualify.
Eoin congratulates Zak Hanna on winning Athletics Ireland's Mountain Runner of the Year, and Kevin Leahy on winning the running category of the 300-mile Yukon Arctic Ultra in 5 days, 19 hours and 15 minutes. René is about to test a carbon-plated trail shoe at a short IMRA race that he once proposed.
René explains why cats and children never need to warm up but desk-bound adults do. He walks through the RAMP protocol. Raise: easy jogging and simple drills. Activate and mobilise: leg swings, lunges and band work in place of static stretching. Potentiate: strides, quick turns and jumps. Both agree it's better to have a simple routine that is 80% right and that you actually do, adding one new exercise at a time.
