Ep 48 Staying injury free with Jason Kehoe of JK Therapy, and balancing racing and training
· Trail Running Ireland Podcast
Jason Kehoe, neuromuscular therapist and former Irish mountain running champion, explains how to stay injury free: trigger points, the "hardware" and "software" of how you move, cadence, sitting on the floor and dry needling. First, René Borg explains how to balance racing and training through a busy summer. This episode is sponsored by Jason's clinic, JK Therapy Sports & Injury Clinic.
Eoin notes another two IMRA wins for Barry McEvoy, and celebrates Irish runners at the 400 km Cape Wrath Ultra in Scotland: Laura O'Driscoll won the women's race in 61 hours 26 minutes despite two sprained ankles, Dave Barry was third man in about 53 hours, and another Irish woman finished fifth.
René quotes Arthur Lydiard: you can't train hard and race hard at the same time. There are exceptions, like Kilian Jornet. He explains the old rule of thumb of one easy day per mile raced, and how to test recovery with a short easy run and then relaxed strides. Hard race-specific sessions only need four to six weeks to peak, and racing draws on the fitness in the bank, so keep easy days truly easy. Split the summer into race weeks, with lower volume and short sharpeners like wind sprints, and non-race weeks for rebuilding. Maintaining fitness takes less work than building it.
