Ep 51 Training in the heat, and Paul Larkins: sub-4-minute miler to editor of Trail Running Magazine UK
· Trail Running Ireland Podcast
With a heatwave across Europe and Ireland, Eoin Flynn and René Borg talk about how heat affects runners and how to train, race and recover safely in it. Paul Larkins, a former sub-four-minute miler who represented Great Britain and now edits Trail Running Magazine UK, talks about his track career, life in running journalism and his best advice for runners.
Eoin welcomes EcoTrail Wicklow, on 24 September, as the show's new sponsor and looks back on a huge Hardrock 100, where Kilian Jornet beat François D'Haene by about 15 minutes in a course record of 21 hours 36 minutes and Courtney Dauwalter won the women's race by a wide margin.
René and Eoin cover the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, cooling down gently after a hot run, the risk of hyponatremia from drinking too much, and simple steps such as running early, staying in the shade and wearing a cap. They explain how heat acclimatisation works, using hot conditions, extra layers or a sauna after runs, and why general fitness is the best protection.
