Ep 53 Training and racing in the heat as temperatures soar once again

· Trail Running Ireland Podcast

With another heatwave on the way and Eoin Flynn on holiday, this shorter episode replays René Borg's feature from Episode 51 on training and racing in the heat: the warning signs to watch for, how to cool down safely, and how to adapt so hot weather makes you fitter.

Eoin introduces the replay with a word for sponsor EcoTrail Wicklow, in Bray on 24 September with 19k, 30k, 46k and 80k distances, and encourages listeners to dig into the show's archive of more than 50 episodes for training advice on topics such as strength training and aerobic and anaerobic work.

In the replayed segment, René and Eoin explain the stages from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, how to rehydrate gently and cool your core temperature after a hot run, and simple steps such as running earlier, staying in the shade and wearing a cap. They cover heat acclimatisation through hot conditions, extra layers or a sauna, why general aerobic fitness is the best protection, and cases where heat has gone too far.
