Ep 57 Moving into autumn training and racing, plus EcoTrail Wicklow 80k winner Luke Grenfell-Shaw

· Trail Running Ireland Podcast

Eoin Flynn and René Borg talk about the change of season from summer trail racing to autumn and winter: why it's fine to lose some sharpness, how to plan next year, and which supplements are worth a look. Luke Grenfell-Shaw, winner of the EcoTrail Wicklow 80k, describes surviving stage 4 cancer, cycling about 30,000 km from Bristol to Beijing, and why enjoyment is his biggest painkiller.

Eoin opens with condolences after the tragedy in Creeslough, County Donegal. He congratulates Zak Hanna on third overall in the Mountain Running World Cup and Sarah McCormack on second at a major race in Slovenia, and notes an Irish win at the IAU 50k European Championships. JK Therapy Sports and Injury Clinic returns as sponsor for October.

René says most runners can't and shouldn't stay at their peak all year. Eoin suggests waiting a day or two before booking an ambitious race for next year. René warns how full the hill racing calendar has become and recommends using cross-country to build strength and race tactics, peaking later in the winter. He makes the case for a varied year, including other sports. On staying healthy over winter, he puts sunlight, sleep, managing stress and good food first, and talks through vitamin C, vitamin D with K2, and magnesium.
